On October 15, 2026 Benidorm hosted a working day on the use of drones and U-space. The city is consolidated as the first European example of integration of drones into a controlled urban airspace and testing ground for future uses.
The meeting was attended by EASA, ENAIRE, Eurocontrol, the Directorate-General for Civil Aviation and other bodies. Processes such as flight plan activation, automated alert management and interaction with dynamic geographical areas were analyzed. The role of the “geozone manager” in airspace management was also discussed.
Benidorm has been working as a testing laboratory with the UPV, the Local Police Air Unit and service providers for years. The objective is to advance the safe and efficient integration of unmanned aircraft in urban environments, aligned with the European regulatory framework of U-space.
This type of experience is key to the future deployment of commercial, security and logistics operations in cities, where the management of unmanned air traffic is essential.
