On 25 June 2026, the transitional period of two years established by Royal Decree 517/2024 expired for the certificates of drone radiophonist obtained under the previous system. From that date, those titles issued by approved training organisations (ATO) or ultralight schools ceased to be valid for operations requiring use of the air band.
According to Article 34 of RD 517/2024, the pilot who is required to use communications in the aeronautical band now needs two separate certificates: one for theoretical training as a radiophonist issued by AESA (indefinite validity) and the other for practical training issued by an examiner authorised by AESA after demonstrating competence in aeronautical communications. The language level is also required.
The acquired knowledge is not lost, but the old document no longer serves. Those who need the radio player for operations in controlled airspace or situations requiring coordination with air traffic control should obtain the new certificates. The procedure is managed through the EASA e-Headquarters.
